Why do we only set goals in January?
Why do we only set goals in January?
Do you ever ask yourself why we seem to only be gung-ho on setting goals, when the world’s clock tells us a new year is upon the horizon?
How many of you have already fallen off on a goal or an intention that you set out for yourself so boldly when January 2026 hit? I will raise my hand here as there are a few intentions that I set out for myself and I will be completely honest, life be lifin! AND I also put some things on my intentions list for 2026 that I have also already taken off my list.
I am a firm believer in trying new things and also being able to say I tried something and it didn’t work, then to sit back and wonder what it would be like. Being more vulnerable with you here, there are things that have simply just lost my interest and things I realized that just weren’t as important as I once thought it was when I put it on my list originally.
Saying this for the people in the back, THAT IS OKAY! It doesn’t mean you have failed, it doesn’t mean you need to keep something on your list if it no longer brings you joy or serves a purpose to where you are going. YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO CHANGE YOUR MIND!
Could you imagine if you liked or had interests in the same thing year after year, time after time with no change? Hello autopilot lifestyle!
I have a handful of things that I LOVE and engage in every year! However, also been able to discern things that once brought me joy, are things that are now substituted with new things that bring me joy. I recently shared at a speaking engagement the things that worked for me in my early journey, are not the same things that work for me now. Why you ask? Because I am not the same as I was when I was 25 and getting sober, nor am I the same person I was when I moved to Arizona in 2015, nor when I moved to Tennessee in 2021. I am not even the same person I was this time last year, or heck even who I was when I started 2026. And I thank God for that. There are parts of me that are still the same though, my gregariousness, life enthusiast, bold, fun loving, strong woman and the parts that are still the same that I am working on. My stubbornness, my need to plan and control things, and my lack of skills when it comes to technology. The difference is this. I have a choice today to embrace all of those parts about me. I have also gone through some deep darkness in my addiction, that are part of my story, and they are not the whole story. They are parts of the past, that have been shed, because in order for new capacity to be recreated, there are things that need to be examined and released.
All this to say, If you have things on that list, that you don’t want to do or don’t excite you as we near half way through 2026, give yourself permission to take that sharpie and cross that shit out! If there are parts that you love about yourself, by all means celebrate that! And if there are parts of yourself that you need to look at, examine it with patience and grace which I know you so freely give to others, treating yourself in the same respect.
Life is meant to be organized, crossed off, rearranged, messy, calm and chaotic. You have a right to change your mind and you have a right to understand the law of two feet, which is if something isn’t serving where you are, or where you are going, you have the power of choice today and that is to have open palms and moveable feet.
Where can you examine things to help set yourself up to re-boost your energy as we head into the second half of 2026? YOU GOT THIS!
